There is nothing quite like CLARITY!
There is no greater feeling than when you have clarity – an ‘Aha moment,’ a ‘Yes, that’s it,’ or a ‘Woo hoo, I’ve worked it out.’
What preludes clarity is often confusion, uncertainty, or going around in circles, with phrases like, ‘I just can’t figure it out,’ ‘Why is this so complicated?’ or ‘I feel like I’m missing something.’
In fact, confusion is, according to numerous studies, is a big contributor stress because it leaves you and others feeling overwhelmed, stuck and often unsure of next steps. It can feel frustrating when you
It is, however, a part of life and leadership – and something, as a leader, you can’t avoid. What matters is how you navigate it. Clarity doesn’t just happen; it’s something you create, often by embracing the messiness and taking intentional steps to move through it.
Here are a couple of my go to tactics when I am confused or lost:
Get Curious.
Start by pausing and asking yourself, “What’s really going on here?” Clarity begins with understanding the root of the confusion. It’s not about having all the answers – it’s about asking better questions.
If your team are part of the chaos – engage with them to uncover their perspectives and pay attention to the things you might have overlooked. Curiosity always shifts the focus from the problem to the possibilities.
Get Creative.
When confusion hits, it’s easy to default to what you’ve always done. But sometimes, the old ways aren’t the solution. What could you try that’s different? What new perspectives or ideas might lead to a breakthrough?
Again, if your team is involved – encourage them to brainstorm without limitations – creativity often unlocks solutions you didn’t even know existed.
Be Courageous.
Leadership isn’t about having perfect clarity at every step – it’s about having the courage to take action even when things feel uncertain. This might mean having a tough conversation, making a decision without all the information, or being vulnerable enough to admit you don’t have the answers but are committed to figuring it out.
Each of these steps allows you to lead through confusion with purpose and either create or keep momentum, not to mention being a good role for your team when uncertainty and doubt appear.
And of course there is that feeling of “Yes, we have light at the end of the tunnel and a way forward!”
Until next week, be well and lead well!
